The History of Zilog & Z80
Its been the news lately, that the original Z80 will finally cease production this year. While lots of news outlets used it as an excuse to publish a list of Z80 based machines, none of them looked at how Zilog and the Z80 came to be. So lets look at how Zilog came to be, and the CPU they created.

This brings back memories. An IMSAI 8080 was the first micro I ever worked with. I was at Hughes Research Labs at the time, at the tail end of the 70s. We had a tricked-out 8080 with dual floppies and a whole 16k of static RAM that ran an automated test setup another guy and myself put together. I’m hazy on the details, but think we used an IEEE-488 card in it to control a couple of digital multimeters and an X-Y probing station. I programmed it in Microsoft Basic under CP/M. Good times :-)

I will absolutely not use Wayland. I don't care what graphics advances they've made under the hood, they've decided to obstruct global hotkeys that I depend on for many of my applications, and refuse to give me any option to change that. My graphical experience with Wayland to X11 is identical, Wayland is simply less functional for what I need. I apologize for the strong comment.

Would just like to comment on the background music used in all your videos. It's not in any way offensive, but it is a member of the set of background music videos, whatever that may mean. Your style and voice is really it's own music. The extra music doesn't add anything. The kind of knowledge and enthusiasm you possess and apply doesn't need any gimmicks. You are your own music. So is this a compliment thinly disguised as a criticism? Perhaps. Keep up your amazingly good work. What do other appreciative viewers think?

As a Pentium Pro user at the period, socket 8 stuff you could get at a fire sale price once the Pentium II came out. Writing on the wall that Intel had given up on socket 8. Ran Windows NT like a champ. Dual booting Windows 95 for games or unsupported software. 90% of the time was in NT. Even running Genesis/Mastersystem emulation (GenS I think) and SNES (ZSNES) games with a controller while playing MP3s with Winamp. 200Mhz low cache PPro felt so much faster than my older Pentium 133Mhz - and it cost way way less. At the time ram was such a huge issue and expense. Now it is such a passing thought.

Ralph Ungermann went on to found Ungermanm-Bass, a network hardware and software maker. UB's Ethernet cards and XNS software were in general use at Microsoft when I was hired into the LAN Manager development group in 1990. They were also the first makers of twisted pair Ethernet interfaces I saw, circa 1992.

55:00 "The model for Wayland is ... predicated on the application running on the same machine as where all your graphics hardware is". <-- This is where Wayland went wrong, and why I don't use it. I rely on network transparency every day, now more than ever. Computing in general has become a lot more network transparent and more accessible over the decades. But Wayland strives to go in the opposite direction, and cuts out the architectural features I need to do simple things like typing and viewing programs and tracking my time. Like, at work I've got a desktop and two notebooks, and I use a single keyboard+mouse to control all three. This is trivial in X11 using network-transparent synthetic input devices with x2x. But in Wayland, this sort of thing is banned for security reasons, because "what if a hacker took control of your cursor?" So it talks only to the local physical inputs... which would mean either giving up both notebooks or physically hurting myself to use them. The devs' recommend solution is to run as root and create kernel-level fake inputs, and forget about multi-user or multi-host functionality. It's wild to hear that, for security reasons, I need to open up root access to regular users. Every time I've tried to use it, I run into dozens of things like this. And every year or so when I check if any of those issues are fixed, they're not... and it doesn't look like they ever will be.

The original Zilog plan was to start out with the Z8 (a microcontroller), then the Z80 general purpose processor and go from there. None were planned to be compatible with the others. They were forced to change the order and release the Z80 first, but the Z8 eventually did come out in 1979. Note that without the MMU the Z8000 could only address 64KB compared to 1MB for the 8086/8088 and 16MB for the 68000. It was the 1986 Z80000 that was Zilog's first 32 bit processor.

The Windows API IS ALREADY open. The courts long ago resolved this question. APIs cannot be copyrighted, only their implementations can. That's why people were able to clone IBM's BIOS, which is an API. The Windows API HAS been implemented via the "Wine" open source project and other projects. It's far from perfect, mainly because it's hard to perfectly duplicate behaviors, especially when they're constantly changing, but an alternate implementation of Windows does exist and is in wide use. It's just not good enough for most apps.

My first contact with the Z80 was the NASCOM 1 in 1978. I got to like the Z80 although I did also use 6502 based Apple 2 at work. For some reason I preferred the Z80 over the 6502, but that may be because I encountered it first. The first ever microprocessor I encountered was the Nat Semi INS8060 SC/MP development system with a whole 256 bytes of RAM.
